High speed, maximum quality requirements
Cracks, constrictions, breaks - just some of the typical and almost unavoidable faults that can occur in the pressing plant despite the use of high-quality manufacturing processes. They not only lead to rising personnel costs, expensive returns and delivery bottlenecks, but also to rejects in production. In the automotive industry in particular, maximum component quality is essential, which is why end-of-line solutions are needed that are capable of detecting the smallest defects that can easily be overlooked in manual quality control.
voestalpine has been focusing for years on the production of high-strength, hot-formed components and complex assemblies made of aluminum with a focus on lightweight construction and exclusive quality for premium customers in the automotive industry. By investing heavily in research and development, the company successfully stays at the cutting edge of technology and ensures that it continuously improves its production in terms of quality, OEE, production efficiency and the reduction of faults and error prevention. Using phs technologies, outer skin parts, prototypes and tools are produced in this context. In order to sustainably optimize quality control on the press shop's outfeed conveyor, voestalpine Automotive Components Schwäbisch Gmünd commissioned elunic AG to install AI.SEE™ inspection cells on the outfeed conveyor.
As an AI-based, visual quality control and defect detection system for pressing plants, AI.SEE™ can be easily integrated into both new and existing outfeed conveyors thanks to its modular recording technology. The system consists of the AI.SEE™ Core, which is the software that ensures the collection and management of all AI.SEE™ inspection cells, and the AI.SEE™ Line-Inspector. This consists of standardized cameras that are attached to the outfeed conveyor inside the inspection cell. When installing AI.SEE™, the individual requirements and needs of the customer are taken into account, which is why a quality inspection system was installed for voestalpine Automotive Components Schwäbisch Gmünd that enables a 360-degree inspection of the production parts.
The AI.SEE™ neural network is trained using live inspection images of components with typical defects. For this purpose, the cameras installed in the AI.SEE™ inspection cell continuously collect images, whereupon the AI.SEE™ line inspector can assess their status directly on the line as "IO" (OK) or "NOK" (not OK) and appropriate follow-up processes can be triggered following the inspection. Thanks to the ability of AI.SEE™ to learn continuously, the precision of the detected defects increases continuously with the inspected components.
To achieve the fastest possible results, elunic's comprehensive industry and technical knowledge will be utilized to enable detailed quality testing at voestalpine Automotive Components Schwäbisch Gmünd in the future, where the different component geometries are irrelevant.
